Anaphylaxis

Background

Anaphylaxis is a word coined in 1902 meaning 'without protection.' A wide variety of substances (allergens) can induce anaphylaxis. Foods and stinging insects are well known causes; however the most common cause of anaphylaxis across all age groups remains drugs. Latex rubber has also been recognised as a cause of serious allergic reactions (see entry, Allergies).
