Aniridia

Background

Aniridia: Congenital abnormality of the iris

Aniridia is a rare congenital disorder of eye development. Usually part or all of the iris is absent, giving the appearance of an enlarged pupil. Sometimes the changes are more subtle with a normal pupil size and alteration of the iris appearance. There is an associated underdevelopment of the central retina (foveal hypoplasia) leading to reduced vision and nystagmus.
