Cerebral Palsy

Background

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a general term that indicates brain injury, either before or during birth. As a result of this injury sufferers have problems controlling movement. A total of 3 in 1,000 children have a degree of CP, which can vary in severity from mild learning difficulties, with or without signs of muscle weakness, to severe impairment.

The severity of CP impacts on the level of care children require. Most children with CP will have a normal life, jobs and families, but seven per cent are so disabled they require around-the-clock care and assistance with daily tasks, such as feeding and washing.
