Fetal Anti-Convulsant syndrome
Background
Babies exposed to anti-convulsant (anti-epileptic) drugs taken by the mother during pregnancy have a higher risk of suffering some sort of birth defect, or congenital malformation, than average. This risk is probably about two to three times normal, meaning that five to ten per cent of babies exposed to these drugs may be affected, although some studies have suggested a higher proportion of babies may be at risk.
