Glomerulonephritis
Background
Glomerulonephritis, inflammation of the glomeruli (small filtering structures in the kidney), is an umbrella name for a range of conditions generally caused by an abnormality of the immune system which is triggered for unknown reasons. Glomerulonephritis is one of the major causes of renal failure, and the main cause of kidney disease in young adults. It is estimated that twenty per cent of those on dialysis have glomerulonephritis.
