Hypomelanosis of Ito

Background

Hypomelanosis (Pigmentary Mosaicism): Hypomelanosis of Ito; Incontinentia Pigmenti Achromians; Ito syndrome; Pigmentary Mosaicism

The condition was first described by Dr M Ito in 1951 and confirmed to have wider systemic associations by Dr T Hamada in 1967. Hypomelanosis of Ito is a group of disorders with the common feature of increased and/or decreased pigmentation in a characteristic formation with swirling patterns around the trunk and linear patterns down the legs and arms. Dermatologists call this pattern Blaschko's Lines.

Very few epidemiological data exist on this condition but it appears to be the third most common neurocutaneous disorder (after Neurofibromatosis type 1 and Tuberous Sclerosis) and is diagnosed in 1 in 8,000 - 10,000 unselected patients in a paediatric hospital.
