Background
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a severe form of congenital heart disease in which the left-sided structures of the heart (mitral valve, left ventricle aortic valve, and aorta) do not develop normally.
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in 5,000 children. Approximately 200 diagnoses are made annually in the UK and Ireland.
