Netherton syndrome

Background

Netherton syndrome is a rare hereditary disorder in which the skin is red and scaly most, if not all, of the time. The characteristic features of Netherton syndrome include inflamed, red, scaly skin; a fragile hair condition, known as "bamboo hair", and atopy (allergy problems). Individuals with Netherton syndrome may show some or all of these features and may be affected differently by the severity of their symptoms.
