Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
Background
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is increasingly being thought of as a misnomer, it may even have episodes of quite raised pressure. It is nothing to do with the Hydrocephalus that is seen following infections or intracranial haemorrhages nor the congenital types of Hydrocephalus predominantly in babies and children. Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a disease that affects generally the elderly population and is perhaps slightly more frequent in men than in women. Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a condition that can often be confused with other causes of Dementia including alcoholism, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease for example. Therefore such diseases need to be excluded prior to a diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus being made. Clearly the treatments for these conditions are potentially quite different.
