Psoriasis
Background
Psoriasis is a non-infectious disease affecting up to one person in twenty. The causes of Psoriasis are unknown. The majority of cases have minimal disease activity with scaling on elbows or knees. However, Psoriasis can present with red silvery scaly patches at any body site.
In Psoriasis the surface skin cells migrate rapidly through the surface layers of the skin causing a build up of scaly skin. Psoriasis can be triggered at injury sites, possible five to six weeks after the injury. In children it can also be triggered by streptococcal throat infections and present with a widespread pattern of small scaly patches known as guttate Psoriasis.
When no triggering factor can be found for causing Psoriasis there is a tendency amongst the medical profession to blame physical or emotional stress, but for the majority of individuals this is not relevant. A small proportion of people with Psoriasis will notice that when they go through a stressful patch their Psoriasis will flare, but for the majority of individuals stress has no aggravating contribution.
