Stroke

Background

Stroke is defined as a sudden and focal neurological deficit. It is a common disease in the UK affecting around 300 in 100,000 people. Although the risk of stroke is dependent principally on age with the risk increasing with every decade from middle age, the commonest modifiable risk factor is high blood pressure.
