Uveitis

Background

Uveitis is the term given to a number of rare eye conditions and is now used to describe any inflammation which occurs inside the eye (as opposed to outside the eye, for example conjunctivitis). This has lead to the term 'intraocular inflammation' being used as an alternative name. Strictly speaking uveitis denotes inflammation of the uvea, one of a number of 'layers' within the eye which are shown shaded in the diagram.
