Contact a Family provides support, advice and information for families with disabled children, no matter what their condition or disability.

Information, support and advice

We offer information and advice to parent carers of disabled children from 6 to 19 years old and to professionals who work with them. We provide a drop-in and phone service with advice on benefits, grants and any other issues. We also support families to access children's centres in their area which offer a range of services for under fives. These include family support services, childcare, health services and employment advice.

Contact us to arrange a time to discuss your family's needs and identify the best ways of supporting you. Our Family Workers will be happy to help.

Support groups

There are opportunities to meet up with other parents in the borough for support and to share information.

We run a number of events including:

  • workshops on a variety of topics such as coping with a new diagnosis, stress management and toilet training
  • family events (subject to funding)

Read our free newsletter and receive information on:

  • forthcoming local workshops
  • activities and family events
  • local, regional and national groups and support organisations
  • other information for families caring for a child with a special need.

Hospitals and hospices project

Parent adviser Toni Rushton is now based every Monday morning at The Evelina Children's Hospital, providing information, advice and drop ins in the main outpatients for any family with a disabled child.

Each family will be able to attend face-to-face drop-in sessions with one of our parent advisers, where parents can discuss their most pressing issues. These may be around disability benefits, how to navigate the condition-specific services they might access, educational issues, or how to find a peer-support group. Our parent advisers will also ring or email families with tailored information about the problems they discussed, and refer them to our helpline if needed.
