Contact a Family provides support, advice and information for families with disabled children, no matter what their condition or disability.

Information, support and advice

We offer information and advice to parent carers of disabled children from 6 to 19 years old and to professionals who work with them. We provide a drop-in and phone service with advice on benefits, grants and any other issues. We also support families to access children's centres in their area which offer a range of services for under fives. These include family support services, childcare, health services and employment advice.

Support groups

There are opportunities to meet up with other parents in the borough for support and to share information.

We run a number of events including:

  • workshops on a variety of topics such as coping with a new diagnosis, stress management and toilet training
  • family events (subject to funding)

Read our free newsletter and receive information on:

  • forthcoming local workshops
  • activities and family events
  • local, regional and national groups and support organisations
  • other information for families caring for a child with a special need.

Contact us to arrange a time to discuss your family's needs and identify the best ways of supporting you. Our Family Workers will be happy to help.

Events survey results

Thank you to all our members who completed our family day trips survey that was sent to everyone with our last newsletter. We asked parent carers to let us know what their preferences are for trips (subject to funding). We received fifty-eight completed surveys. The results can be seen in our Lamber Winter 2015 newsletter.

Counting the Costs

On Tuesday 25 November Contact a Family launched its Counting the Costs campaign at the Houses of Parliament. Parents attended with their children and were able to talk directly to MPs about their lives and the financial challenges they all face.

Contact a Family carried out research asking more than 3,500 UK families with disabled children for their experiences. The findings show that over the last two years there's been a sharp rise in the number of families going without the basics like heating and food. This is leading to ill health, stress and debt. Read the Counting the Costs report [PDF].

Shaped by what thousands of families say would help, the Counting the Costs campaign is calling on the UK government and energy companies to halt this alarming trend.

We need your help to make this happen. You can do this by sending our campaign email to your local MP. On our website there is a template letter set up so you can do this easily. It will only take one minute, but it will make a huge difference.  Nearly 1000 people have already have taken action but we need your help too. Take action now.

The campaign also wants more families to seek advice on their family finances from Contact a Family. We have produced two new guides for the campaign - Money Matters [PDF] and Help with fuel bills [PDF]. Order printed copies today by calling Contact a Family's free helpline on 0808 808 3555 (Mon-Fri 9:30am-5pm) or email helpline@cafamily.org.uk.
