Campaign aims

Get involved

Contact a Family's vision is that all families with disabled children are empowered to live the lives they choose to live, and achieve their full potential, for themselves, for the communities they live in and for society.

For that vision to be realised we have set ourselves a number of campaign aims – these are alongside those we work to as a lead partner of the Every Disabled Child Matters Campaign.

Our main campaign aims are:

  • No family with a disabled child should be living in poverty
  • Families with disabled children are aware of and claim their full entitlements to benefits and other financial support
  • The winter fuel payment is extended to families with disabled children
  • DLA is set at a level that fully meets the additional costs of caring for a disabled child
  • For Cares's Allowance to be substantially increased
  • Society in general is aware of the needs and challenges facing families with disabled children in the UK
  • Families with disabled children are aware of and have access to relevant local services including sufficient short breaks
  • Families have easy access to transparent information about services, eligibility criteria and any costs involved
  • Families with disabled children are aware of and have access to support groups and other opportunities to meet others and share experiences around caring for a disabled child
  • Childcare should be fully accessible for disabled children and affordable to their families
  • Disabled children have equal access to play and other leisure opportunities
  • Families with disabled children are fully supported by service providers and should not have to fight for any help they are entitled to
  • The education system meets the needs of every disabled child and enables them to reach their full potential
  • Parents and disabled young people should have access to information and support around the transition to adulthood so that disabled young people grow into well-supported and confident adults who are able to contribute to their communities
  • Parents are aware of and supported to take up genuine opportunities to shape the way that services are planned, commissioned and delivered
