Why are we campaigning? Families of disabled children are particularly vulnerable to fuel poverty. They often live on below average incomes and are more likely to be stuck indoors. Many conditions or disabilities worsen in the cold weather, so parents are forced to have the heating on constantly.

What we want

We want a winter fuel allowance for families with young disabled children in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) at the middle or higher rate of the care component, and/or the higher rate of the mobility component, similar to the payment currently received by pensioners.

What we are doing

• Lobbying government for a commitment to extend the winter fuel payment to families of young disabled children.
• Raising awareness of how rising heating costs are affecting families of disabled children.
• Produced a Winter Guide with information on what families can do to meet the extra challenges the cold months bring.
• Working with EDCM to achieve this aim.
