Meeting other parents can be a huge source of support for families caring for a disabled child.

Most families find it helpful to meet or chat with other families who are in a similar situation to them. We can help by putting you in touch with other parents and families.

Disability support groups

Many disabilities and medical conditions that affect children (including some very rare ones) have a national support group, usually run by parents of a child with the condition. They can be an invaluable source of support and advice, especially when it feels as if nobody else understands what you're going through.

Also, if you don’t have a firm diagnosis yet, there may still be groups that can support you around some of the symptoms your child is showing, for example a charity for people affected by restricted growth.

Local support groups

You may want to meet up with other parents of disabled children in your area. One way to do this is to join a local support group. Some local groups cover specific conditions but many are for parents of children with any kind of disability.

One-to-one linking

If your child has a rare condition for which there is no existing network of parents, our family linking officer will try to link you on a one-to-one basis with other parents caring for a child with the same condition.

MakingContact.org

Contact a Family runs an online linking service for families.

Local contacts

We have local offices around the UK. As well as offering support and advice to local families they also organise regular events. We also have volunteer parent representatives around the UK who are all parents of a disbabled child themselves.

Online communities

There are many social networking websites, such as Facebook which you can use to meet other people. As a parents of a disabled child you may want to use these sites to meet other families over the internet. As well as having our own presence on social networking sites Contact a Family can also offer help for other parent support groups interested in setting up a presence on these websites as well.
