One child in 20 is born with a disability. Contact a Family is the only charity that supports families of all children with a disability and we urgently need your help.
We already give life-changing support to 340,000 families a year but more and more are coming to us in desperate need of our help. As a result, the demand for our services continues to be far greater than we can meet.
This is why Samantha Cameron helped us to launch our Stronger families. Happier lives appeal in October and is hosting an event for Contact a Family at Downing Street on 17 January 2012.
We need to raise awareness of the plight of families with disabled children and we need to raise £6.5 million to give the practical help and support thousands of families who are at breaking point are crying out for.
Here’s how your money will help us to help them:
- £100 pays for a family to go on one of the 251 Contact a Family workshops, outings and family days that are held across the UK every year. This gives families the chance to meet each other, share their experiences and be less isolated.
- £1,000 pays for a workshop covering topics like how to manage challenging behaviour, the transition from
childhood to adulthood and how to manage debts.
- £10,000 will provide 25,000 families with invaluable information guides covering practical advice on subjects like education and benefits.
- £100,000 will run 100 workshops making a huge difference to 1,000 families.
Today, in the UK:
- one in seven families with a disabled child is going without food.
- almost a quarter go without heating.
- isolation has caused 25 per cent of families to break up.
- pupils with special educational needs are eight times more likely to be permanently excluded from school.
