In some areas of the East Midlands, we have home-based family workers and volunteer parent representatives.

Volunteer parent representatives

Our volunteer parent representatives are all parents of disabled children and offer peer support and local signposting.

Our freephone helpline can give you information, support and advice.Our advisers can help with:

  • benefits or tax credits issues
  • assessments and statements of special educational needs
  • details of local parents support groups
  • information about your child's condition
  • how to access help with getting a break from caring
  • details of charities which give grants to families with disabled children
  • advice and information on any other aspect of caring for a disabled child
  • the helpline has a registered immigration adviser who can give basic advice in immigration matters.

We also have access to over 170 languages through our interpreting service

Information for families
We also hold lots of useful local information for families, including details of your nearest:

  • children’s centre – a centre offering a range of information, support and activities for children under 5 and their families
  • Family Information Service – free and impartial information on childcare and family services for parents of children and young people aged 0-19.
  • Parent Partnership service – free and impartial information, advice and support for parents of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN).
  • parent support group – a group of parents meeting regularly to offer each other mutual support and information.

Local Events

Free half-term Museum Club for siblings of disabled children

Where: Snibston Discovery Museum, Snibston, Ashby Road, Coalville, Leicestershire, LE67 3LN When: Monday 13 – Friday 17 February 2012, 10am–12noon

This is a chance for children aged 7–11 years of age growing up with a disabled brother or sister to get together with other siblings, have fun and take part in new activities.

The workshops are free of charge but booking is essential. Bookings are first come, first served. Last date for booking is Monday 6th February 2012.

Additional Needs/Disability Group - Long Eaton Children's Centre

Where: Grange School, Grange Road, Long Eaton, Nottingham.
When: the 3rd Thursday in every month from 3.30pm-5pm.

Open to all families who have a child with an additional need/disability, these free play sessions are run by a children's centre worker. Outside agencies are also invited along to offer families advice and information.

Additional Needs/Disability Group - Sandiacre Children's Centre

Where: Sandiacre Children's Centre, Victoria Road When: the last Friday of the month all year round 9.30am-11am.

Open to parent carers and children with additional needs aged 0-5 years, these play sessions are run by a children's centre worker. Outside agencies are also invited along to offer families advice and information. No cost to attend. No cost to attend. For more information, phone Linda Gilbert on 01629 537824.
