National Autistic Society three day Help! Programme
Dates: Tuesday 13th January 2009, Friday 16th January 2009 & Tuesday 20th January 2009
Time: 9.30am–3pm
Location: Sunderland Centre for Voluntary Service, Sunderland
Description: This free programme, which runs for three sessions, is for parents/carers of children aged between five and 11 years and who have received a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within the last 18 months. The sessions cover an overview of ASDs, tips for communication, education, services, benefits and approaching behaviour difficulties. A free sandwich lunch and refreshments will be is provided. Two members per family may attend (or one family member and a friend). Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

National Autistic Society Help 2 Parent Seminar - Managing Anger
Date: Tuesday 20th January 2009
Time: 10am–2.15pm
Location: Swalwell Community Fire Station, Gateshead
Description: Practical seminar focusing on communication strategies and dealing with difficult behaviour. It also looks at dealing with your son/daughter’s anger and some coping strategies. (In this particular seminar it will not cover physical interventions). The seminar is specifically aimed at those parents/carers with children aged six to 16 years of age with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome or a child with an ASD who attends a mainstream school. Cost: The seminar is free to attend, light refreshments will be provided (but parents should bring along their own lunch if required).

Date: Tuesday 27th January 2009
Time: 10am–2.15pm
Location: Swalwell Community Fire Station, Gateshead
Description: Seminar aimed at parent/carers of people aged 3-18 years who have a diagnosis of Autism, Asperger Syndrome or ASD. It offers a chance to explore the effect the world has on your child’s senses and uses activities that can help them deal with this.
Cost: The seminar is free to attend, light refreshments will be provided (but parents should bring along their own lunch if required).

Northeast Special Needs Network ‘A Guide to Post-16 Benefits’
Date: Thursday 29th January 2009
Time: 9.45am-12.00pm
Location: Bradbury Employability Centre, Northern Counties College, Newcastle
Description: Workshop for parents and carers to include details of the recent changes with the introduction of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
Cost: Free to parents/carers, £15 for professional members of NSNN and £25 for professional non-members. Refreshments are included.
