In Yorkshire and the Humber our local services are provided through volunteer parent representatives.

Volunteer parent representatives

Our volunteer parent representatives are all parents of disabled children and offer peer support and local signposting.

Other ways we can help

Helpline
If we don’t have a local contact in your area, our freephone helpline can give you information, support and advice.

Information for families
We also hold lots of useful local information for families, including details of your nearest:

  • Children’s centre – a centre offering a range of information, support and activities for children under 5 and their families.
  • Family information service – free and impartial information on childcare and family services for parents of children and young people aged 0-19.
  • Parent partnership service – free and impartial information, advice and support for parents of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN).
  • Parent support group – a group of parents meeting regularly to offer each other mutual support and information.

These are just some of the services offering support to families of disabled children – for more information about the full range of services in your area, contact our helpline.

Debt advice in Sheffield and Rotherham

Contact a Family has entered into a pilot project with Citizens Advice Bureau to improve the supply of face to face debt advice to families with disabled children. Sheffield and Rotherham are two of the pilot areas in which the new service has started. It offers home visits for families. Contact our helpline on 0808 808 3555 to make an appointment.

Debt advice in Bradford

Contact a Family has entered into a pilot project with Citizens Advice Bureau to improve the supply of face to face debt advice to families with disabled children. Bradford is one of the pilot areas. This project is not currently able to offer home visits for families, although the service will provide this in the future. Appointments can be made to see the debt adviser, at Bradford CAB. Contact our helpline on 0808 808 3555 to make an appointment.

Siblings of disabled children - Workshop for professionals

This workshop is for any professional with an interest in learning more about the needs of siblings of children with disabilities or life limiting conditions, and anyone interested in developing support services for siblings.
