How we can help
Information, advice and support
We offer information, advice and support to parents and carers of children with any additional need or disability as well as to professionals working with families. We also have an information library accessible to all Contact a Family members.
Newsletter
Contact a Family Lewisham produces a regular newsletter. It offers information on sources of local support, events, topics of interest to families such as benefits, holidays and national organisations. Workshops and members social events
We run a series of workshops and members social events covering topics such as challenging behaviour, transition and stress management. We also run occasional new members socials so that new members can get to know each other and link up if they choose.
Family activities
We raise funds in order to run a programme of events and activities throughout the school holidays. Activities range from local cycling to trips to theme parks and castles. We also run an annual weekend away to Macaroni Woods and monthly swimming sessions for the whole family in Deptford.
Membership
Contact a Family Lewisham is a local project working with over 500 families within Lewisham who have a child or children (up to 19 years of age) with any disability or additional needs.
Parents and carers can refer themselves direct to Contact a Family or can ask a supporting professional to make a referral. New families are invited to come to a drop-in session or a new members group during term-time to have a chance to meet staff and hear about our services before deciding whether they wish to become a member.
Membership is free of charge.
Play inclusion project (P.I.P)
We run a play inclusion project aimed at developing inclusive play in the borough and enabling families with disabled children to access and enjoy the play and leisure services that are available to all children.
Funding
Lewisham Contact a Family relys on external funding in order to provide a service and activities in the borough. Membership is free but we do ask members to consider making a donation - either one off or by standing order to help us to continue our service in the borough. Debt advice in London
Contact a Family has entered into a pilot project with Citizens Advice Bureau to improve the supply of face to face debt advice to families with disabled children. The Greater London area is one of the pilot areas in which the new service has started. There are seven workers based in Camden CAB who offer advice and help for families with disabled children anywhere in the Greater London area. They will arrange to visit you at home anywhere in London.
