Family workers
Information and advice
We offer information, advice and support to parents and carers of children with any special need or disability as well as professionals working with families. We can help you find information on your child's condition, about getting extra help at school, benefit entitlements and tell you about other organisations who can help you.
Workshops
We run regular informal workshops for parents where you can gain information, share experiences and learn how to help yourself and your child. Recent topics have included managing money, coping with stress, and traveling with a disabled child.
Family activities
The Southwark office run an annual programme of events open to residents of Southwark who have a child or children with any additional need or disability, Tel: 020 7277 4436 to find out more about becoming a member.
Newsletter
Contact a Family Sothwark produces a regular newsletter called Grapevine. It offers information on sources of local support, events, topics of interest to families such as benefits, holidays and national organisations. Pamper days
Ever felt in need of five minutes to yourself? We offer regular free pampering massage and reflexology sessions to parents and carers.
Drop-ins and social events
These are a good way of meeting other parents.
Working with Children’s Centres
We are working with Children’s Centres in Southwark’s to provide information and support to families of children aged 0-5 years old with additional needs. Family workers run weekly advice sessions in each locality.
Parent/carers’ council
Contact a Family Southwark facilitate a parent/carers’ council. It serves as the voice of parents with disabled children in the borough and is at the forefront of parent participation.
At Contact a Family Southwark we are keen to work together with parents and professionals. Our work is informed by a steering committee made up predominantly of parents. We also work closely with colleagues in both voluntary and statutory organisations and with Contact a Family’s National Office.

Contact a Family has entered into a pilot project with Citizens Advice Bureau to improve the supply of face to face debt advice to families with disabled children. The Greater London area is one of the pilot areas in which the new service has started. There are seven workers based in Camden CAB who offer advice and help for families with disabled children anywhere in the Greater London area. They will arrange to visit you at home anywhere in London.
