Alzheimer’s disease

Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis

Inheritance patterns
There is no single gene for Alzheimer’s disease. Genetic factors are responsible for the disease in a small number of families where the disease affects people at an early age. In the majority of these cases the disease is linked to a fault on chromosome 14. In the wider community there is a genetic component, most commonly linked to the ApoE4 gene. In these cases, genetic factors alone do not explain why some develop Alzheimer’s disease, and others do not.

Prenatal diagnosis
None
