Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis

What are the symptoms?

The onset of the disease may be sudden but more usually it develops over a period. Lethargy is often the first symptom and, in young children, parents may notice that the child is miserable or irritable. They may have a rash, often on the knuckles, hands and face, but it also may occur on other parts of the body, such as elbows, knees or ears. The child may gradually become weak and may also have fever, joint pain, tummy ache and headaches.
