Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis
Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis
Inheritance patterns
Some research has shown that certain parts of our genetic make-up may make Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis slightly more likely. However these diseases are not "inherited" and it is very rare indeed to have two patients with myositis in any one family. JDM and JPM are more common in girls than boys; while DM and PM are more common in women than in men.
Prenatal diagnosis
The condition is extremely rare under one year and therefore is not diagnosed before birth.
