Global Developmental Delay
Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis
Inheritance patterns
These will depend on the underlying cause of the condition. Infections, for example, will never be inherited, although an infected mother can pass on the infection to her unborn child or during the child’s delivery. Down syndrome, the most common cause of marked developmental delay, is chromosomal but usually not inherited, the major risk factor being increasing maternal age.
Prenatal diagnosis
This is dependent on the underlying cause of the condition. If there is a strong family history of individuals having global developmental delay, then an expert clinical genetics opinion should be sought for further assessment and testing.
