Kidney disease

Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis

Inheritance patterns
In the adult type of polycystic disease inheritance is autosomal dominant or by a new mutation.
Infantile polycystic disease inheritance is autosomal recessive.
Juvenile nephronophthisis inheritance is autosomal recessive.

Prenatal diagnosis
Infantile polycystic disease can be detected by ultrasound scanning. The adult autosomal dominant disorder may be diagnosed by DNA analysis and chorionic villus sampling if there is an appropriate family history.
