Migraine

Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis

Inheritance patterns
Only the rare condition familial hemiplegic migraine has an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. There is undoubtedly a familial link but whether migraine is a learned response or a true genetic condition is the subject of debate.

No specific pattern of inheritance has been identified for the more typical types of migraine, and although a genetic component may be present, environmental factors are also important.

Prenatal diagnosis
None.
