Moebius syndrome

What are the symptoms?

Affected people have poor facial expression and eye movement. Localised mouth, face and limb malformations may be associated with the disorder. Involvement of other cranial nerves is common. Occasionally, the fifth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth cranial nerves are involved, resulting in difficulty of chewing, swallowing, and coughing, which often leads to respiratory complications. Learning disability and Autistic Spectrum disorder have been reported in some cases. There is also a well documented association between Moebius and Poland syndrome, a disorder characterised by absence of pectoralis major (chest muscle) and congenital limb defects.
