The Association is a National Registered Charity No. 294354, established in 1979. It covers England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. It offers support for people living with MND, their carers and health and social care professionals. It produces regularly updated information sheets on research and current clinical trials, details on request. The Association has over 6,000 members.

The Association is a Scottish Charity Registration No. SCO 02662, established in 1981. It is a member of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations representing 50 organisations in 40 countries working to achieve a Baseline of Services for ALS/MND. It offers care and support to anyone diagnosed with MND living in Scotland. It has specialist care advisers linked to neurology departments at hospitals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen. It publishes a quarterly Newsletter 'Aware' and has an equipment loan service, library and information service for people with MND, family, friends and professionals. The Association offers an education service for families, health and social care professionals a counselling service and has a holiday caravan facility. It runs befriending services in Fife and Tayside. The Association responds to the needs of the estimated 280 people living in Scotland with MND.
