Paget Disease

What are the symptoms?

Most people with Paget disease are not aware that they have it. For others, the most common symptom of Paget's disease is bone pain. The specific areas of pain depend on the bones affected. Features may include headaches, back pain, pain in the shin bone and hip pain. Individuals may show some or all of these features and in addition may be differently affected by the severity of their symptoms. Thus individuals may be so mildly affected that they are unaware of their symptoms and the diagnosis only comes to light by chance on an X-ray or blood test. In some people the affected bone can cause nerve compression - the most common instance of this is deafness due to Paget disease of the skull.

In the advanced stages of Paget disease, bowed limbs and increased head size may be evident. If there is damage to joint cartilage, arthritis can develop. Some symptoms may initially seem to indicate other conditions such as arthritis.
