Peripheral Neuropathy
Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis
Inheritance patterns
The underlying causes for some peripheral neuropathies are sometimes successfully determined; however in many cases the underlying cause remains undiagnosed and this is what is called cryptogenic or idiopathic.
Recent studies suggest that between a third and a half of all undiagnosed neuropathies eventually turn out to be hereditary type neuropathies not recognised because of the lack of information about relatives or because symptoms have not yet started in any family members. This clearly demonstrates the importance of early recognition, referral to an appropriate specialist, improved communication, greater awareness and further education amongst all parties.
