Inheritance patterns
Most are sporadic events; some cases may be due to Stickler syndrome which is caused by a type II collagen defect and has autosomal dominant inheritance.

Prenatal diagnosis
Where a cleft palate is present it may be able to identify this using ultrasound scanning.
