Pituitary Disorders

What are the causes?

Disorders of the hypothalamic/pituitary axis are generally due to benign pituitary tumours (adenomas) which cause either over- or under- secretion of pituitary hormones, leading to specific illnesses. Some adenomas, described as “non-functioning”, do not produce hormones but can cause local pressure effects resulting in headache or compression of adjacent anatomical structures such as the optic chiasm, causing a visual field disturbance.
