The primary immunodeficiency association is a national registered charity, number 1107233, and is the only patient support charity in the UK representing the interests of those people suffering from serious inherited disorders of the immune system. Genetically based, primary immunodeficiencies are treatable, but as yet, not curable. The World Health Organisation recognises over 100 of these conditions, ranging in severity from life limiting to life threatening. Some of the more common conditions are listed in the index but please contact the PiA for further information on conditions not mentioned. The Charity has over 3,500 patient and family members plus a substantial number of medical, professional, pharmaceutical and corporate supporters. PiA provides funding for important medical research into PID and actively campaigns for greater awareness, improved diagnosis and treatment for PID patients. They provide patient support and advice, including; an online discussion forum; After Hours Helpline; patient days; young member activity holidays; and information and advice on social and welfare benefits. PiA publishes a regular newsletter, Insight, and a wide range of supporting literature, which is available on request.
