Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum
What are the symptoms?
The main features of PXE include:
- Papules (small yellow-white raised areas) and laxity of the skin in flexures (folds) such as the neck and the arm pits. Although not painful, the altered appearance of the skin can cause upset.
- Visual impairment in over fifty per cent of people with PXE, caused by angioid streaks (tiny breaks in the elastin-filled tissue), bleeding and scarring of the retina. This can lead to loss of central vision and significant loss of sight.
Other features of PXE include:
- Possible heart attacks or stroke resulting from blood vessels being affected;
- Leg pain as blood cannot easily reach the muscles;
- Gastro-intestinal bleeding in some people.
