Rasmussen Encephalitis

Background

Rasmussen Encephalitis: Rasmussen syndrome
Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a progressive inflammatory disorder of one hemisphere of the brain (the brain is split down the centre into two hemispheres; the right and left). The disease starts at one site in one hemisphere and spreads to adjoining areas on the same side. Curiously, it only spreads to the other hemisphere in extremely rare cases. The inflammation leads to loss of nerve cells and scar formation and usually results in moderate-to-severe disability. Although RE is most often diagnosed in children under the age of ten years, it can also start in adolescence and adulthood; in this population, the course of the disease is usually milder. RE is a very rare disorder, therefore, extensive data about the incidence and prevalence of the condition are not available.
