Schizophrenia

Inheritance patterns and prenatal diagnosis

Inheritance patterns
No-one knows for sure as yet what causes schizophrenia but causation is likely to be genetic rather than up-bringing. In people with a parent who has Schizophrenia, there is a 1 in 10 risk of developing the condition. Whereas the risk factor in the general population is 1 in 100. It is believed that heredity provides about half the explanation of the illness but as yet the gene or combination of genes responsible has yet to be discovered.

Prenatal diagnosis
None
