Spinal Injuries

What are the causes?

Spinal cord damage
Most spinal cord damage is caused by physical injuries - road traffic accident, fall, diving accident, shot or stab wound, etc., and occasionally by a medical accident during surgery. Broken vertebrae or a foreign body pierce or crush the spinal cord itself. This is called a traumatic lesion of the spine. However, viruses and viral infections (such as transverse myelitis), cysts and tumours on or near the spinal cord, can cause permanent damage leading to progressive paralysis.
