The Association is a National Registered Charity No. 1054097, established in 1974. SIA offers information, advice and on-going support to spinal cord injured people on all aspects of living with their disability. SIA's services include a Helpline providing information and advice, a Peer Support scheme to assist those undergoing treatment in Spinal Injuries Centres and a range of expert publications, including a bi-monthly magazine, addressing a wide spectrum of issues of interest and concern to spinal cord injured people. The Association has around 6,000 members including affected individuals and health care professionals.

The organisation is a Scottish Registered Charity No. SCO15405, established in 1960. It is the national voluntary organisation concerned with new and long term spinal cord injured people, their relatives and friends, along with those involved in the management, care and rehabilitation of the injury.
