Stargardt Macular Dystrophy

What are the symptoms?

What was thought to be a separate condition known as Fundus Flavimaculatus, characterised by yellow-white spots scattered in the peripheral retina and minor changes at the macula with only a small degree of loss of central vision, is now thought to be a variant Stargardt Macular Dystrophy.

People affected by Stargardt Macular Dystrophy experience in varying degrees:

  • Decreased central vision progressing over a period of years;
  • Loss of colour vision;
  • Gradual loss of ability to distinguish faces;
  • Reduced ability to see clearly.
