Stiff Man syndrome

How is it treated?

While treatments do not lead to a cure, they can control symptoms in the majority of individuals. Although there is no known cure for SMS, some individuals are more responsive to certain treatments than others

Research has been conducted into the role of GAD in the development of Type 1 insulin dependent Diabetes and in Stiff Man syndrome. Future research studies may compare the immune response to GAD in individuals with SMS and in Type 1 insulin dependent Diabetes; and in so doing determine whether those individuals with SMS and Diabetes show a different immune response, genetic profile and clinical features from those individuals with SMS without Diabetes. Such research may lead to a therapy to modulate the immune response in both diseases.
