Transverse Myelitis

What are the symptoms?

The features of TM vary in individuals and will depend on which nerve fibres in the spinal cord are affected by inflammation. Changed function is experienced below the level of the inflammation but remains normal above. The severity of the symptoms is related to the intensity of the inflammation. Features can include:

  • Leg weakness
  • Altered sensation including pins and needles
  • Back pain
  • Numbness
  • Inability to distinguish temperature of objects and liquids
  • Loss of control of the bowel or bladder
  • Loss of sexual function.

The area of spinal cord inflammation will determine the nature of some of the features of TM.
