School transport

Today we launch our biggest inquiry into school transport for disabled children, and we want to hear from you.

Tell us your experiences and help us show decision makers what they must do to improve school transport for disabled children in the UK.

What's the school transport issue?

School transport is an integral part of a child's education. If a child can't get to school or has a stressful experience getting to school, they are not able to learn and take part in the school day like other children.

Sadly, we hear from too many families whose child is eligible for school transport, but has been refused. We hear from others whose child has been offered unsuitable transport, such as a disabled child who needs close supervision when out in public offered a bus pass to get public transport to school. School transport remains one of the top issues parents are calling our helpline about.

We know that school transport is an issue that varies across the country, so we want to build a clearer picture of the problems facing families with disabled children.

What do we want to achieve?

We want to show decision makers what they can do to ensure no disabled child misses out on adequate school transport.

This means understanding what the problems are, and most importantly identifying the solutions, and that's why we're launching today's inquiry.

Who do we want to hear from?

UK families, transport providers and commissioners - we want to hear from you.

We want to hear experiences - positive and negative - across all the age ranges, from early years to post-16.

How can you take part?

Families can share their views today by getting started on our school transport survey.

Parent carer groups, transport providers and commissioners can share their views by emailing una.summerson@cafamily.org.uk

The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. If you would like the survey sent by hard copy or would prefer to make general comments about school transport, please email una.summerson@cafamily.org.uk or call 020 7608 8742.

The deadline for responses is 31 March 2017.
