What are RSS feeds?

RSS feeds allow you to get the latest news items from our website without having to come back here each time. When a feed is grabbed by an appropriate feed reader program, the headlines and a brief summary of each of the top stories will be displayed on your computer every time they are updated by us.

You may hear feeds called "RSS feeds". RSS is generally understoood to stand for 'Really Simple Syndication'.

How to get our feeds

In general, the first thing you need is something called a feed reader. This piece of software will check any feeds you subscribe to and usually will let you read any new items. Some web browsers have feed readers built in although a lot of people use stand alone programs.

If you are using a feed-reading web browser you can click on the subscribe link or the Subscribe button next to the relevant news list on this site and your browser will take you through the next step to subscribe.

If you opt for a separate application you should add the web address of the feed to your list of feeds within that. You can find the relevant web address for a feed by clicking the Subscribe link or the Subscribe button next to the news list on this site. The address to use will be displayed in your browser's address bar. Some software allows you to drag the button from our page and drop it into your feed reader.

How to get a feed reader

At the time of writing there are a number of feed readers available, try searching with for "RSS feed reader" in your favourite search engine. Also at the time of writing these popular browsers support feed reading by default (this list is not exhaustive):

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Mozilla SeaMonkey
  • Opera
  • Safari
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

Using our feeds on your website

If you run your own website, you can display the latest headlines from our feeds on your own site using RSS.

We encourage the use of Contact a Family feeds within another website but require that the feed and any news items within it are linked back to this site with an appropriate attribution (e.g. "News from Contact a Family").

We reserve the right to prevent the distribution of our news content and Contact a Family does not accept any liability for any of its feeds.
