Welcome to the Family Life Zone, our project to help children's centre practitioners in England provide better support to families of disabled children.
Early intervention from professionals and access to the right specialist support can help prevent many family breakdowns. ‘Family Life’ will help you focus on the unique issues that can lead to a family break up.
Our research What makes my family stronger found that:
- 53 per cent of parents caring for a child with a disability believed it had caused either ‘some’ or ‘major’ difficulties or the breakdown of their couple relationship.
- Almost two thirds said that support from the wider family was poor or unsatisfactory.
- 65 per cent said that emotional support from professionals was poor or unsatisfactory.
More recently, our research Forgotten families and isolation report found that:
- 72 per cent of parents experience mental ill health such as anxiety, depression or breakdown.
- Almost half (49 per cent) have felt so unwell that they asked their GP for medication or to see a counsellor.
We can help you in your work with families by:
'Family Life' workshops and training for children’s centres staff
- Understand better the specific problems and circumstances faced by parents of disabled children and how this can impact on the whole family
Be confident in:
- raising the sensitive issue of relationships.
- understanding why and when parents need to seek support.
- your knowledge of specialist support and information to help strengthen family relationships
