Caring for a child with additional needs
Date: Tuesdays, 2nd September 2008 – 14th October 2008
Time: 10am-1pm
Location: VOCAL Carers Centre, Edinburgh
Description: A free seven week course for people caring for a child with additional support needs. The course looks at diet, medicine, support from social services, the education system, communication and affects of caring. The final session focuses on the ways carers can look after themselves, dealing with stress and learning about different ways to relax.

Beauty Inside and Out Day
Date: Saturday 6th September 2008
Location: Edinburgh
Description: A fun, pampering day for 13-16 year olds to celebrate who you are, build confidence and make new friends. The day, organised by Changing Faces, is for young women with visible difference to their face, hands or body and gives an opportunity to take part in games, activities, role play and chat. The day will be rounded off by a professional pampering session which includes practical health and beauty tips for looking and feeling good.
Cost: £10 per person, which includes lunch and refreshments.

Learning without limits: a celebration of choice, diversity and freedom in education
Date: Friday 12th September 2008
Time: 9.30am–4.30pm
Location: Webster’s Memorial Theatre, Arbroath
Description: This one day conference is organised by Schoolhouse, Scotland’s national home education support organisation and will focus on the broad theme of freeing education from the constraints of traditional schooling. It is aimed at all those with an interest in educational rights and freedoms including parents and learners aged 12 and over. Confirmed keynote speakers include John Taylor Gatto, renowned international speaker and author of many books on educational reform, and Iain Nisbet of the Education Law Unit of the Govan Law Centre.
Cost: £25 for individuals, £75 for small voluntary organisations, £150 for public or private sector and large voluntary organisations.

My Time with Shirley Young
Date: Thursday 18th September
Location: SPACE, Craigmillar, Edinburgh
Desription: Caring for a disabled child can often leave parents feeling exhausted and stressed - it can be difficuult to find time for your own needs. This positive and motivational workshop will help you to look at the impact that caring has on your own well-being, explore your coping style and consider new ways of looking after yourself. Shirley Young is the parent of two disabled adult sons and an independent consultant and trainer.

NDCS Scotland Family Weekend for new families
Date: Friday 19th - Sunday 21st September 2008
Location: Aviemore
Description: Has your child recently been identified with a hearing loss? This weekend, organised by the National Deaf Children’s Society, is especially for families with deaf children who have been newly identified within the last 12-18 months. The weekend is an opportunity for families from across Scotland to spend a relaxing and informative few days meeting other families and taking part in information sessions. Topics covered will include sharing experiences, understanding audiology, communication in the family and information on benefits.

Signpost Open Day

Description: Signpost provides information and support to families with disabled children across West Lothian. This open day will include the launch of their new website, fun side-shows for children, fire engine and a boccia demonstration by No Limits club members. There will also be the opportunity to attend the Signpost AGM.

Parents Together - an event for parents affected by disability
Date: Thursday 16th October 2008
Time: 9.30am-4pm
Location: Capability Scotland, 11 Ellersly Road, Corstorphine, Edinburgh EH12 6HY
Description: ENABLE Scotland, Capability Scotland, FirstHand and One Parent Families Scotland have organised a day which promises to be relaxing, informative and an opportunity for you to meet other parents/carers who have children/young people with a disability, or who have a disability themselves. Workshops will be running on a variety of topics including short breaks/respite options, additional support for learning, parenting strategies (with a particular emphasis on disability and how it affects family dynamics and relationships), and post-school options for young people at the point of transition to adult services. Alternative therapists will be offering a range of taster massage and beauty sessions and there will also be a workshop on relaxation techniques. A range of organisations will have stands with disability related information. Free childcare can be provided if you need it and there will be a lunch provided at no cost. You can choose to attend for all or just part of the day.

Picture the Child, West Lothian Parent Forum Conference
Date: Monday 3rd November 2008
Location: Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Livingston
Description: Conference designed to celebrate the achievements of children and young people with disabilities, and how they are helped when we all work together. Workshops look at partnerships between parents and professionals, consulting with children with communication challenges, how to ensure successful inclusion; and the experiences of young people with additional needs.
Cost: Free for parents and professionals involved with children with additional support needs.
