  Using this site - Accessibility

We like to think that all visitors to our site find the information they are looking for quickly and easily. That is why we try to make this site easy to use and easily adaptable to suit your needs.

Finding your place in the site. The navigator to the left of each page shows you each area you can visit. The current area or page is highlighted. Each option also has a longer explanation which can be seen by leaving your mouse over the option for a couple of seconds. When you want to go to our home page, you can either click on the 'Home' option or you can click on our logo (at the top left of every page).

Keyboard shortcuts - Accesskeys. Each option in the navigator to the left can be accessed using your keyboard, as well as your mouse. You access the option by pressing the 'Alt' key and the number for that option. Depending on your browser, you may then need to press then 'Enter' key. Please note that this feature does not work in all browsers. The following accesskeys are active on all pages for the nine main navigation sections of this Web Site:

1: go to the Home page

2: go to the How We Can Help page

3: go to the Medical Information page

4: go to the Help For Parents' Groups page

5: go to the Publications page

6: go to the Campaigns & Policy page

7: go to the More About Us page

8: go the the Using This Site page (this page)

9: go to the How You Can Help page

To use accesskeys in:

  • Internet Explorer 5 and above: hold the ALT key and press the number/letter of the relevant accesskey (this highlights the correct link), then press RETURN.
  • Internet Explorer 4: hold the ALT key and press the number/letter of the relevant accesskey.
  • Internet Explorer 4.5 for Mac: accesskeys are not supported.
  • Netscape: accesskeys are not supported.
  • Lynx: accesskeys are not supported.
  • Opera: Press Shift and Esc together, release both keys, then press the number of the accesskey.
  • Firefox: numerical accesskeys (which are recommended by the UK Government) are not supported.

Increasing the size of the text. We have tried to make the text size on our site easy to read, but if you find that you would prefer the font size to be larger or smaller, then you can easily control this using your browser settings (something that doesn't work on many sites). Please note that if you change the text size you view our site at, this will affect all other sites you see until you change your browser setting back again. If you use Internet Explorer, click on the 'View' menu and select the 'Text size' option followed by your preference.

Skipping the banner. If you are using an audio browser and don't wish to have the banner read out to you on any page, we have included a 'skip banner' link as one of the first entries on the page. If you select this link you will be taken straight to the navigation bar followed by the page heading and then the page content.

Adobe Acrobat .pdf files. In order to view, or print out .pdf format documents you will need to use Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is available free and can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. If you have an older version of Acrobat Reader you may not be able to open some of the files on this site - you will need to upgrade to the latest version. People with visual difficulties may find it useful to also download tools designed to improve the accessibility of .pdf format documents from http://www.adobe.com/accessibility.
