Cycling novice Shirley takes on Tour de France challenge

Tuesday 25th July 2017

Shirley and daughter FelicityParent carer Shirley is taking on an epic cycling challenge to raise vital funds for other families with disabled children - but not before learning to ride a bike first!

Shirley will ride from London to Paris, arriving in time to watch the exhilarating finale of the biggest bike race in the world, the Tour de France.

She'll spend four days in the saddle, cycling 308 miles from capital to capital. The journey weaves through glorious English countryside, crosses the Channel at Dover, and from Calais travels along quiet French country lanes, through traditional market towns and past the war memorials and cemeteries of the Somme.

Shirley is mum to Felicity, who is disabled. Shirley says: "My belief that my daughter has the right to live like any other child is what motivates me. There are plenty of things that she needs extra support to be able to do, things that seem simple to other children and their parents are hard for her and for us to achieve.

"I chose to do the London to Paris cycling challenge because I can't ride a bike. If I succeed I will have had to struggle with my fear of falling off, of road traffic and the distance. I will have to improve my fitness and stamina, but I know if I succeed I will feel fantastic, and in future I will be able to cycle anywhere I ever want to go.

"I wanted to fundraise for Contact a Family because I am passionate about the support and self-belief that they give families so that they can fight the many battles to get support for their child. Once they succeed in one challenge the sky is the limit."
