Don’t forget to renew your tax credits by the end of July

The deadline for renewing tax credit claims is fast approaching. Read this article to find out what you need to do to make sure you continue to receive the financial support you're entitled to. HMRC also produce a short video explaining what you need to do to renew your claim.


If you've received an annual review form only

Some families on certain means-tested benefits, such as Income Support, will have their tax credits award renewed automatically.

These families will have been only sent an annual review form to check. If this applies to you your renewal pack will say 'check now' and it will have a black line across the front page. You only to contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if the information in the review form is not accurate or if something has changed. Otherwise your claim will be automatically renewed.


If you've received a review form and an annual declaration form

However, most families will have been sent not only a review form but also an annual declaration form. These families will have been sent a renewal pack with a red line across the first page and it will say 'reply now'.

If you've been sent this form, you must remember to complete and return it by 31 July - unless your renewal pack has a different deadline.

You can complete and return your form by post, online or by phoning the tax credit helpline on 0345 300 3900. The helpline number is likely to be extremely busy between now and 31 July and you may struggle to get through, so please remember that you can renew online at the GOV.UK website.

You still need to complete your renewal pack even if you don't want to make a new tax credits claim for the coming year. This is to finalise your award for last year and to make sure that you've been paid the right amount.

If you have made more than one claim during the last year, for example, because you stopped claiming as a single person and started a new claim as a couple you must complete a review form for each claim.


What if you miss the deadline?

As it's the summer holiday, many parents get caught out and miss the deadline. If you don't respond by 31st July, the tax credits office will write to inform you that your payments have stopped.

Your claim can be reinstated if you respond within 30 days of receiving their letter, but there may be a disruption in payments.

If you don't respond within a further 30 days, you will have to reclaim tax credits and you are likely to be asked to repay any tax credits you have received since April 2017. If you miss the 30 day extension and you live in a universal credit full service area you might not be able to make a new claim for tax credits and may need to claim universal credit instead.

If you haven't received an annual review form yet, call the Tax Credits Helpline on 0345 300 3900 urgently to let them know.
